We are in Week 4. Here’s the assignment for Week 4:
Read Chapter 1 of the textbook. Make sure you understand the following from this chapter:
*Supply Chain, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and the goal of SCM
*Old Supply Chain versus newest type supply chains (vertical integration versus virtual integration (see the exhibit on this in the textbook)
*Simple Supply Chain and Extended Supply Chains (see the Exhibit in the textbook)
*5 Major Drivers (Production, Inventory, Location, Transportation, Information). Also see the table in textbook under Tips and Techniques about these 5 drivers and Responsiveness and Efficiency
*Participants in the Supply Chain (producers/manufacturers, distributors/wholesalers, retailers, customers, and service providers)
Then answer the following questions based on the info from Chapter 1:
a)What’s the difference between a simple supply chain and an extended supply chain? Be specific.
b)In Chapter 1, it describes 5 major drivers in SCM – Production, Inventory, Location, Transportation, and Information. For each one of these drivers, explain in Your Own Words – what this driver is about and what type decisions a company may have to make for each driver. Be specific and again – Summarize in your own words – do not copy word for word from any document or the textbook.
c)One of the participants in a supply chain could be a service provider. Briefly explain what a service provider is. Also give a real example of a service provider (an actual company name) and describe the services that company provides.
