This is for my English Gothic/Classical Literature class and 40% of my grade depends on this.
THERE ARE 2 BOOKS/STORIES you need to NEED TO KNOW/READ: Euripides’s “Medea” AND Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”
It is important to choose a prompt that allows you to mention a lot of examples. (Examples are the key in this essay)

Your essay will be assessed according to the following criteria: 1) your knowledge of the material, lectures and discussion; 2) your capacity for clear and effective prose expression; 3) your capacity for original insights. “A” grades will be given only to essays that do not just repeat the content of my lectures or your TA’s observations but also show a capacity to think originally and individually.

1. The works that we have studied so far present characters who become isolated from the society around them. Compare and contrast the problem of isolation or aloneness in two of these works.
2. Compare and contrast how two works that we have studied subvert norms of gender or challenge prevailing attitudes about the binary of male and female.
3. A characteristic of gothic literature is that it refuses to provide clear answers or arrive at a full resolution of the problems that it raises. Compare and contrast the open-endedness or lack of resolution of two works we have studied.
