Response Post: Merriam-Webster (2022) defined change as the act, process, or result of changing, such as alteration, transformation, or substitution. While I always understood that social change occurs, I never considered how it occurred and its effect on society. Vago (2004) signified that several factors cause social changes in societies: technology, ideology, competition, conflict, polity, the economy, globalization, and structural strains. Through this semester, I have learned and valued the importance each factor has when shaping change in the lives of individuals. One of the most important takeaways that I have gained from this course is how different people use different theories to construct, support, and defend their assumptions. Dillion (2014) states that the interpretation of facts is contingent on the theoretical lens utilized. Various assumptions formulated by theorists prompt individuals to focus on some concepts while avoiding others, meaning social change can be interpreted differently depending on the individual’s viewpoint. Like my other foresight course, this course helps me examine the viewpoint of others, why they make the decisions they make, and the importance of understanding another’s vantage point.
Each of the ten theories of social change helped me see how individuals and groups come to their conclusion and shape social change. Whether attempting to gain a customer, a voter, or a soul, it is critical that we understand the theories that govern values, beliefs, and culture. Doerr (2019) notes that organizations have had to reevaluate their operations in recent years based on social changes and changes in culture and values. Foresight has taught me that trends don’t simply occur, but some factors have caused those trends. This course has allowed me to view how an individual’s or group’s values and beliefs help shape the direction of social change. Finally, I have learned that it is critical before developing any strategic plan, I must understand society, or more importantly, the social group I am targeting if I want to gain their business or their ear.
