View the documentary The Paedophile Next Door and answer the following questions:
1. Consider the experiences of Sarah Forsyth and Ian McFadyen, who were repeatedly victimized as children. Recall Levesque’s idealized beliefs about family. How did beliefs about family, status in the community and tolerance of violence in society allow the abuse to occur? Do their experiences deny or confirm Levesque’s theory?
2. Eddie, an admitted pedophile, states that abusing children is abhorrent, but there are no alternatives being offered to keep from acting on those urges. Do you believe that pedophiles are deviants who should be removed from society through strict laws? Or, do you think that pedophilia should be considered the same as any other mental disorder and that treatments should be developed?
3. Although castration is used with some success in limited situations, it does have limitations. Which interventions do you think have the best chance of being effectively implemented to prevent child sexual abuse?
