Setting objectives and managing performance: Use the case study The Sydney City Education Precinct (SCEP) or a project of your choice to develop the following: The scenario: You are newly appointed project manager, working on a project that is organising an important sporting event. The project is progressing slowly, and the sponsors are worried about the team’s ability to deliver. Originally, you were involved in this project on an ad-hoc basis, but now you have been asked to step in as the project manager, solve the issues and deliver the project. The key issues identified so far are: · Difficulty engaging volunteer resources that are not fully committed to your project · Differences in opinion between some key staff on your project that are causing delays · Lack of clarity about roles and responsibilities among some teams within your project that seem to be “running their own show” You need to develop a plan that will ensure timely and quality delivery. Your sponsor asked you to prepare a written document outlining your overall performance plan for the project resources, and a brief verbal presentation to clarify how you plan to catch up and deliver the project as planned. You are planning to meet with the team today for the first time and get more information, but you also know that you need to prepare this plan for tomorrow. You had a handover meeting with the departing project manager and the sponsor. There is a lot of pressure to improve the situation on this project. Include the following in your group assignment: 1. Performance plan approach 1. Outline your approach to ensuring that all three of your performance issues will be addressed and managed. Specify how you will be informing your team and your project owner/sponsor of your plan to solve the issue. 2. Give example of correspondence (verbal or written) to each group (one for your team and one project sponsor/owner) – no more than one page each 2. Outline the different techniques you have used to design your communication with your team and sponsor/owner in the previous task. Comment on the areas you think your team addressed effectively and identify the areas for improvement. Recommended length – one page (no more than two pages).
