For this assignment, you will choose a film or TV episode (one that is at least an hour in length) and write an analytical essay about how that particular piece of popular culture discusses or depicts a set of technologies, a single technology, or technological systems. In doing so, you need to answer the following question: In what ways does the film or TV show reflect concepts and/or themes related to Technology and Society? In answering the question, you need to stake a claim. In other words, you need to make an argument about your interpretation of that film or TV show as a cultural representation of how we think about technology. For example (you can answer one or a couple of these): – Does the film or TV show reinforce or challenge cultural ideas about technological determinism? If so, how and why? – In what ways does the film depict ideas about “innovation” or the “genius” of inventors? – In what ways does the film depict technologies/technological systems in a pessimistic or optimistic light? – How does the film or TV show historize technologies and technological systems and how might that portrayal be beneficial or problematic? Important point here for those of you interrogating fictional sources: you should not discuss the historical accuracy of how the technologies or systems are portrayed/discussed. These are just suggestions, and you are not obligated to address these questions. The main objective of the paper is for us to critically engage — not passively consume — the piece of popular culture we choose for the assignment. Please use the third and fourth episode of the Hulu TV Series Pam & Tommy for this analysis.
