In a thesis-driven, argumentative essay of at least 750-1000 words, analyze a major theme that you find prevalent in the short story “Recitatif.” Use the theme of “people becoming the very thing they despise.” You will have to examine literary traits as support for your chosen theme. You should articulate the theme as a message or lesson that the story teaches us. The entirety of the paper should work toward validating your theme as a major operating principle in the text under study. You should not summarize the story, nor should you evaluate it. In one of your body paragraphs, you must also relevantly quote (or paraphrase) and cite from a secondary article for that short story. Structure: Your essay will have an introduction ending with a thesis statement, at least three body paragraphs with argumentative topic sentences, and a conclusion that synthesizes the main points of your analysis and the significance of the theme. Each body paragraph will include multiple pieces of evidence (i.e., quotations) from the story that you analyze to support your argument for the story’s theme. One body paragraph will contain a relevant quotation (or paraphrase) from a secondary source that you relate to your argument.
Style: Your prose should be clear and academic. Your writing should be free of any grammatical or formatting errors. our essay should be typed and double-spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins and an appropriate header and heading. Your essay must include a Works Cited page in correct MLA bibliographic format, with entries for the story and the article. You will analyze one of the assigned short stories, quoting multiple times from it in each body paragraph. You will also quote or paraphrase at least once from a secondary source on that story, and relate its relevance to your argument. As we will discuss in class, appropriate elements for analysis include allusion, symbolism, characterization, setting, imagery, narration, dialogue, etc.
