What is a Resume?
Resumes are a formal document that provides an overview of your professional qualifications that includes your relevant work experience, skills, education, certifications, and accomplishments.
What is a Cover Letter?
Cover letters are a one-page document with three structured paragraphs that introduces the applicant to a potential employer. Cover letters should accompany the resume.
Paragraph 1: Include what position you are applying for and how you learned of the position.
Paragraph 2: Tell the employer why they should hire you. In a couple of sentences, describe your accomplishments, previous experiences, and job-specific skills. Look at the qualifications listed on the position announcement then make sure you respond to each qualification. Least at least two accomplishments that fit directly with what your employer is looking for. Focus on what you can do for the company instead of what the company can do for you.
Paragraph 3: The final paragraph that closes the letter and accomplishes four things. 1) requests a meeting/interview at the employer’s convenience. 2) Provides a follow-up date that you will get in touch with the employer. 3) Invites the employer to contact you with questions. 4) Thanks to the employer for their time and consideration. A handwritten signature should be on the cover letter.
