Throughout the various style periods, composers have had their works pulled or boycotted due to the views of the composer. For example, the Nazis appropriated the works of several composers. The impact to the legacies of those composers has been interesting to follow. The most recent composer to come up against the “cancel culture” is Beethoven. Do you think canceling Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss or Ludwig van Beethoven is important or do you believe that works of art music should be judged/viewed through the lens of the time in which those works were written? Using one of the three composers listed above, write a 600 word essay that articulates your view of the cancel culture as it regards the chosen composer.
