In researching and writing history, primary sources are crucial in understanding past events. These papers are meant to give you the opportunity to interpret the evidence for certain events for yourself. In general, each paper should be thoroughly proof-read, edited, and spell-checked. Your paper should have a proper format with an introduction and conclusion. It must have an argument, which includes a thesis and evidence. It must be 3 to 4 pages long. The introduction of your paper must have a thesis statement. You should focus more on the primary source documents and less on the editor summaries and introductions. You need to cite your sources and be specific about the title and author of each document you use. Keep in mind that in each book some of the text was written by the editors while the various documents are written by different authors. You need to make sure to cite the page number for every quotation taken from the text.

The topic of the second paper is about the way the English East India Company conducted itself in India. Using specific examples from the primary source documents in Margaret R. Hunt and Philip J. Stern, write an essay that addresses the activities of the English East India Company in India. What do the actions and attitudes of the East India Company tell you about the nature of seventeenth-century companies? What are some similarities with and differences from corporations today and how did the nature of the company affect the process of making peace between it and the Mughal Empire? Why did the Mughals think the English were not merchants, but were actually uncivilized pirates?
