(1)A number of factors contribute to the fact that poor people are less healthy than well-off people. (2)For one thing, low-income families tend to have less nutritious diets than higher-income families. (3)In particular, low-income diets are often deficient in the amount of protein which they provide. (4)Many poorer families probably have some level of malnutrition much of the time, a fact that influences their susceptibility to illness. (5)Second, the general standard of living among low-income groups is likely to be lower. (6)Their homes are more crowded, more likely to be in disrepair, and more often located in dangerous neighborhoods. (7)Another factor affecting health in poor people is that low-income families usually receive less medical care and lower-quality medical care than wealthier ones do. (8)Failure to have minor ailments cared for may make these people more likely to have major ailments later on. (9)Fourth, people with low incomes are probably under a lot of physical stress, a factor which appears to be related to the onset of illness. (10)Last of all, poor people are subject to a great deal of psychological stress, a factor that may be even more powerful than physical stress in leaving the body exposed to illness.
